Keeping Healthy: Nutrition: Nutrition and School
Printer-Friendly Version

It is important for you and your family to discuss CF nutrition with your teachers and nurses as soon as school begins. The CF Foundation has an excellent nutrition education sheet you can bring with you.

Enzymes
Each school has its own policy for giving enzymes to students, so it’s important to follow your school’s rules about taking medication. A special form signed by a doctor is usually needed for you to take enzymes before lunch. You may need to leave class a few minutes early so that you have enough time to eat lunch.

Extra Portions/Snacks
Children who buy lunch at school may not receive big enough portions and may need an extra snack. It is often possible to get extra portions and snacks by talking to the school administration. Your CF team can write a prescription asking for extra portions or snacks, if needed.

Bathroom Breaks
You may need extra bathroom breaks. Letting your teacher know this at the beginning of the school year may help avoid any embarrassing moments.
