 | Infertility related to vas deferens abnormalities is very common in male CF patients. Recent medical advances have made this a potentially treatable problem. In vitro fertilization can be used with a technique called intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), which involves insertion of a needle into the epididymis to retrieve sperm. The sperm are injected into an egg in a Petri dish where they remain for two to five days for fertilization. If an embryo develops, it will be implanted into the female uterus. There is a 50 percent success rate for this procedure. Most women with CF are able to have children if they do not have significant lung problems and have good nutrition.
